 Dear Signal Hill Families,

Early Friday morning, a tragedy struck Signal Hill School. A new family to Signal Hill, the McGee's, were involved in a fatal accident which took the lives of Alfredo, a third grade student here at Signal Hill, his mother, and his two year old brother. The two female siblings and the children's father are still hospitalized.

The loss has been difficult for the staff here at Signal Hill and for the many students who were friends with the student. We had extra social workers from local districts on site here today to assist our staff and students during this difficult time. Students will have varied reactions to the loss of a peer. Any reaction is normal in the grief process and can range from withdrawal, to crying and anger. We encourage parents to discuss with their children their reactions and feelings regarding this situation. If you feel your child needs additional counseling or support, please do not hesitate to contact the school office or Katie Nowell, school social worker.

As funeral arrangement information becomes available, we will pass along the details to you. The staff at Signal Hill has started collecting donations for the family to assist them with basic needs during this time. If you would like to make a donation, please drop it off in the office or contact our social worker, Katie Nowell, at knowell@signalhill181.org. Checks should be written out to "Signal Hill School."

On behalf of the entire Signal Hill School family and community, we offer our sincerest condolences and sympathy to the McGee family.

Suzette Lambert   Kelly L. West
